Via dell'Amore: tickets, hours and tips
Information last checked:
The Via dell’Amore (“Lovers’ Lane”) is the short path cut into the cliff between Riomaggiore and Manarola, about 900 metres with the sea right below. It is the most famous walk in Cinque Terre, and since its reopening it works differently from the past: you need a ticket and a time slot booked in advance.
Is it open?
Yes. The path was closed in 2012 after a landslide. After restoration works it reopened in full on 27 July 2024, closed again for a landslide in late October 2024, and has been open since 14 February 2025, with paid, booked access from 15 February 2025. It can still close at short notice in bad weather (see below), so check the official website on the day.
Tickets and booking
- Booking is mandatory: you choose a date and a time slot. Tickets are personal and cannot be changed.
- Access is sold together with a Cinque Terre Card (Trekking Card, or Treno Card if you also want unlimited trains), not as a separate ticket. In 2026 the one-day Trekking Card with the Via dell’Amore started from €10, and the Treno Card from €22, with higher prices on the busiest days.
- You can book on viadellamore.info, on the Park’s card shop, or at the Park information points in the stations from La Spezia to Levanto.
- Free for children up to 3 years old and for visitors with disabilities (with documentation).
Offers and prices have changed several times since the reopening, and older articles online still describe a separate supplement. The official website is the only reliable reference for what you will pay.
Opening hours
The path is open every day, with seasonal hours:
| Period | Hours | Last entry |
|---|---|---|
| 29 March – 24 October 2026 | 9:00 – 21:00 | 20:30 |
| 26 October 2026 – 28 March 2027 | 9:00 – 18:00 | 17:30 |
The hours for the 2027 season have not been published yet. In winter the closing time can also change depending on the state of the path.
Direction, length and time
- One way only, from Riomaggiore to Manarola. The entrance is on the left as you come out of Riomaggiore station.
- About 900 metres, which takes around half an hour at a relaxed pace with photo stops.
- Entries are spread through the day, up to about 400 people per hour, which keeps the path from getting overcrowded.
- To go back, take the train from Manarola to Riomaggiore: it is the very next stop, a couple of minutes away.
Bad weather
The path closes during weather alerts, including yellow ones, which are common in autumn. Refunds are given only when an official weather alert (yellow, orange or red) is in place. If you are visiting between October and December, the wettest months, keep an eye on the forecast and the official website.
Our tips
- Book ahead in high season, especially for weekends and around sunset, when the light on the cliffs is at its best.
- Early morning slots are usually the quietest, and in summer the coolest.
- Plan the walk with lunch or an aperitivo in Manarola at the end, then come back by train.
- The path itself is short and easy, but reaching it from Riomaggiore station involves stairs: the station lifts have been out of service for some time and are being replaced.
Staying at either end
Our apartments are at both ends of the path. Rio View and Casa Maja are in Riomaggiore, where the walk starts, a few minutes from the entrance. Nadir is on Manarola’s marina, steps from where the path comes out. Staying here lets you pick the quietest time slot instead of the one that fits a day trip.
